Someone told me once that they will read a book until the author states something they don’t agree with, they they throw it away. With non-fiction, that makes almost makes sense, but this was about fiction. When people are closed off to different values, opinions and perspectives in the innocuous world of novels, the same tolerance probably leaks over to real life. Broad brushing statements may seem out of line, but boundaries are created because they don’t naturally happen. The broad brush is usually accurate. People are stunningly consistent, but to what is the challenge of getting to know someone.

When you don’t get it, do you toss it away? Some people do, blaming the material or the teacher, finding the fault outside themselves, the narcissist in the classroom. Some people do, blaming their own deficiencies or struggles, the downtroden in the classroom. Those that can incorporate new information tend to have a flexible world view, only bring an incremental difference in time and effort, and they take responsibility for the I in the statement “I don’t get it” and they learn to learn. A handy skill, when life is full of lessons instead of classrooms.

Once someone asked me, “Do you think you are smarter than everyone else?” Her question revels the belief why she was so inflamed. You can believe that intelligence is fluid, or you can believe that intelligence is fixed. If you believe that it is fixed, then it is possible to determine rank, draw a finish line and hand out the ribbons. If it is not, then the finish line is never achieved and there is no such thing as absolute. Be careful what you believe, because that is your reality, according to a recent study. You determine your intelligence with as much control as you determine your hairstyle. It’s sad when people think they can’t improve their intelligence and are doomed to suffer a life of trying to constantly prove what they have and hide what they don’t.

Do people look for answers by talking behind someone’s back, filling in the blank with their own perspective or forgetting about an answer altogether and resorting to a pat classification instead of going directly to the person in question and asking because they don’t realize it’s rude, ineffective and only serves to inflame whatever feeling they are trying to get rid of? No, it’s because it’s not clarity they are after, but an attempt to control internal and external perspective: image, reputation and relative status.
